BUILT AROUND YOUR MOVE

The right amount of help.

In your quote request, tell us the floor at both addresses, whether there is a lift, and whether the van can park in the yard. List your largest pieces of furniture and any extra services too, so the quote matches your move.

Home, office and small moves in Espoo

Our own team handles moves within Espoo and between Espoo, Helsinki and Vantaa. You can arrange everything in English or Finnish, which helps if you have come to Espoo to study at Aalto University or start a new job. Longer-distance moves are agreed separately.

As well as home moves, we handle office and business moves and small moves, such as delivering a single sofa or moving a student’s belongings. For an office move, the phases and schedule are planned around how your business runs. In an office building in Keilaniemi, Otaniemi or Leppävaara, for example, agree the loading spot and goods lift with the property in good time. A weekend is often a good time to move workstations into new premises.

How your move in Espoo works

Here is how a move with us works, from quote request to moving day:

  1. Tell us about your move using the form or WhatsApp: both addresses, the size of your home, floors, lifts and your preferred date. Photos of large furniture and storage areas help us gauge the volume.
  2. You receive a free written quote that sets out the scope of work, the pricing basis and any extra costs before anything is booked.
  3. We go through the practicalities at both ends: whether the van can park in the housing company’s yard, as it usually can in Espoo, whether a street permit is needed, whether the lift needs booking and when the keys change hands.
  4. On moving day we carry your belongings to the van, drive them over and carry them into the rooms agreed. Any extras you chose are handled on the agreed schedule.

Moving tips by Espoo district

Espoo has five city centres – Leppävaara, Tapiola, Matinkylä, Espoonlahti and Espoo Centre – with blocks of flats and low-rise neighbourhoods around them. Moving day can look very different from one area and building to the next: a spacious garden-city yard, a new block by a metro station and a detached house in the north each need their own plan.

Espoo’s West Metro stations run from Keilaniemi to Kivenlahti, and new housing is going up around many of them. The Jokeri light rail (line 15) runs from Keilaniemi via Otaniemi and Leppävaara to Itäkeskus in Helsinki, so if you live along the line, plan the loading spot in advance.

Here are some practical notes from around Espoo. Every building is different, though, so always tell us about yours when you ask for a quote.

  • Leppävaara: one of Espoo’s largest centres, with many blocks of flats, the Sello shopping centre and a train and light-rail station. The city rail link is being built around the station, so check the loading spot and any temporary traffic arrangements in advance.
  • Tapiola: in this spacious garden city the van can often reach the yard or a car park, but the walk to the door may be long. The centre is still being redeveloped, so expect roadworks on some central streets.
  • Otaniemi and Keilaniemi: the Aalto University campus has a lot of student housing, and the first homes in Keilaniemi are being completed. On campus and at new sites, we confirm the driving route and unloading spot before moving day.
  • Matinkylä and Olari: Matinkylä’s centre is built around the Iso Omena shopping centre and metro station, beside the Länsiväylä motorway. Apartment yards are usually reachable by van, but the streets around the shopping centre are busy.
  • Finnoo: a new seaside district around the metro station that is still being built. Streets and access routes keep changing, so the route and work areas are checked just before the move.
  • Espoonlahti and Kivenlahti: fast-growing centres around the Lippulaiva shopping centre and the western end of the metro line. At new buildings it pays to confirm the route into the yard and book the lift for the move if needed.
  • Espoo Centre (Espoon keskus) and Kauklahti: there is a lot of construction along the coastal railway, including the city rail link. Kauklahti is mostly detached and terraced houses, so the van can usually get close to the door, but on a narrow residential street check that it has room to turn.
  • Northern Espoo: green, low-rise areas such as Kalajärvi, Lahnus and Niipperi. Drives to southern Espoo and Helsinki are longer. Also check that any private access road is passable, especially in winter.

Moving from Helsinki to Espoo, or Espoo to Helsinki

Many moves start in Espoo and end in Helsinki or Vantaa, or the other way round. We handle moves between the cities with our own team and vehicles, and plan each end separately.

From Helsinki to Espoo, the usual routes are Länsiväylä (Highway 51), Turunväylä (Highway 1) or Ring I, which ends at Länsiväylä in Keilaniemi. Between Vantaa and Espoo, the route often runs along Ring III. The main roads slow down at rush hour, so we allow for the drive when planning the day. Within Espoo the drive is usually short, although a move between Northern Espoo and Espoonlahti, for example, covers more ground.

Street permits are applied for through each city’s own service, and housing company rules can differ. Plan the key handover so that you can hand back your old home and get into the new one on the same day. For the Helsinki end, our guide to moving in Helsinki has more tips.

Moves between Espoo and Vantaa work the same way. For the Vantaa end, see movers in Vantaa.

Parking the moving van and street permits in Espoo

In Espoo, resident and guest parking is mainly in building yards, so the moving van usually parks in the housing company’s (taloyhtiö) yard or car park. Ask the property manager or maintenance company whether the van may drive in and where it can park, and keep the emergency access route clear. Agree on booking and protecting the lift, door codes and keys at the same time. A short note on the stairwell noticeboard lets your neighbours know when the move is happening.

On the street, stopping briefly to load or unload is not parking under the Road Traffic Act, so the van may stop to load in a no-parking zone, but not in a no-stopping zone. If your move uses a street or other public area in a way that affects parking, pedestrians, cyclists or traffic, Espoo always requires a permit for a temporary traffic arrangement. The permit is valid for a set period. You apply in the city’s eLupapalvelu e-service, which requires strong electronic identification such as Finnish online banking codes, and attach a plan of the work area and traffic signs. If you cannot sign in yourself, someone else can apply on your behalf with a power of attorney. Along the light rail line, working within 4 metres of the track always needs a separate permit from Kaupunkiliikenne Oy as well, and you need to contact them at least 14 days before the work starts.

Under Espoo’s fee schedule in force since 1 June 2024, a temporary traffic arrangement for a move costs a €70 processing and supervision fee plus an area-use fee of €1–4 per day for every 15 m² or part of it, depending on the street’s fee class. Under the same schedule, no area-use fee is charged for works lasting under 24 hours that are applied for through eLupa and do not damage the street, and the processing fee may be waived if the case is handled fully electronically without a site inspection. Check the current fees with the city. Apply early: the capital region’s joint guideline says the city must be contacted at least a week before any work that blocks or disrupts movement on a public area. Tow-away notice signs always need a city permit and must be up at least 48 hours before they take effect.

Espoo is updating its street parking markings in phases, so check the signs on site shortly before moving day. For more parking tips, see our guide to parking a moving van in Helsinki.

Example: moving a one-bedroom flat from Helsinki to Espoonlahti

This is a hypothetical example of how a typical move to Espoo is planned. Every move is different, so your own plan and quote are always based on your details.

The customer is moving out of a one-bedroom flat (kaksio) on the top floor of a four-storey building with no lift in Helsinki. The new home is in a building with a lift near Espoonlahti metro station. The customer sends photos of the furniture on WhatsApp and mentions that the lift in the new building is booked through the maintenance company. They also book move-out cleaning so the old flat can be handed back clean. Stairs, carrying distances and how much is packed in advance affect the timing most.

The plan covers:

  • Stairs at the old address: the crew size is matched to carrying everything down from the top floor (the fourth floor, as Finns count it) without a lift.
  • The bed and wardrobe are taken apart before carrying and put back together in the new home.
  • Loading on the Helsinki street is planned in advance, with street space reserved under the city’s rules if needed.
  • In Espoonlahti the van drives into the yard, and the lift is booked and protected for the move.
  • The drive along Länsiväylä is timed to avoid rush hour where the schedule allows.

What affects the price of a move in Espoo?

Two homes of the same size can need very different amounts of work, so the price is always worked out from the details of your move. Your written quote shows, before you book, what the work includes, how the move is priced and what could add extra costs. The quote is free and does not commit you to anything. The more detail and photos you send, the more closely the quote will match the actual move.

For example, moving a studio or one-bedroom flat within Espoo is usually a smaller job than moving a detached house from Northern Espoo to Helsinki, but stairs and long carrying distances can change that.

If you are comparing quotes from several moving companies in Espoo, check that they cover the same work. Our guide to what affects moving costs explains each factor in more detail, and there is a separate guide to comparing moving quotes. You can also read more about how we price moves.

The main factors are:

  • Volume: furniture, boxes and anything in a storage room, cellar or attic
  • Floors and lifts at both addresses
  • The carrying distance from the door to the van, for example across a large yard
  • Parking and any permit needed to use the street
  • Heavy items or items that need special handling
  • The driving distance, for example from Espoo to Helsinki or Vantaa
  • Extras such as packing, furniture disassembly and assembly, or move-out cleaning

Extras in the same quote

Add extras to your quote request and they are handled as part of the same move, all in one quote. Our packing service suits you if time is short or you have a lot of fragile items, and furniture disassembly and assembly helps when a bed or wardrobe will not fit down a narrow stairwell in one piece. Move-out cleaning makes it easier to hand back your old home in good condition, and storage helps if you cannot get into your new home straight away.

The household tax credit and extras

Since the start of 2025, moving work itself, such as packing, carrying and transport, no longer qualifies for the tax credit for household expenses (kotitalousvähennys). Move-out cleaning and assembling new furniture can qualify when they are invoiced separately from the move. Read more in our guide to the tax credit and moving, and check the current rules with the Finnish Tax Administration.

Recycling and getting rid of old furniture in Espoo

A move is a good time to clear out. Sortti stations, run by Helsinki Region Environmental Services (HSY), accept large items and other household waste. The only one in Espoo is Ämmässuo (Ämmässuontie 8). Depending on where you live, the nearest other stations are Jorvas in Kirkkonummi and Konala in Helsinki. Sortti stations are open on weekdays from 7am to 9pm, but Ämmässuo and Jorvas are normally closed at weekends. At weekends you can use, for example, Konala (Helsinki) or Ruskeasanta (Vantaa). Check the current opening hours on HSY’s website.

Furniture and household items in good condition can be donated to Kierrätyskeskus, the Helsinki Metropolitan Area Reuse Centre, which has stores at Iso Omena, Nihtisilta and Finnoo in Espoo. The Finnoo store accepts small furniture such as chairs, shelves and chests of drawers. Kierrätyskeskus also collects donations from your home for a fee: €24.90 from the front door or €39.90 from inside your home. Large items must not be left in your building’s bin room without the property manager’s permission. Broken or worn-out large items can be collected by HSY’s paid Sortti-nouto collection service, which also covers Espoo.

If you would rather not deal with it yourself, add removal of old furniture to your move.

After the move: municipality of residence and health services

Register your new address no earlier than one month before the move and no later than one week after it. It is free, and one notification covers both the Digital and Population Data Services Agency (DVV) and Posti. The address in the population register decides your municipality of residence (kotikunta), which determines your health services, daycare and school places and municipal tax. If you move to Espoo by 31 December, you pay municipal tax to Espoo from the following year.

Espoo belongs to the Western Uusimaa wellbeing services county, whereas Helsinki organises its own social and health services. When you move from Helsinki to Espoo, your health services are organised by Western Uusimaa from then on. If you move from Espoo to Helsinki, responsibility passes to the City of Helsinki, and if you move to Vantaa, the Vantaa and Kerava wellbeing services county takes over. In Western Uusimaa, your health centre (terveysasema, your local public health clinic) is based on your home address. You can also choose a health centre yourself anywhere in mainland Finland. The county processes change requests within three weeks, and you can change again no sooner than a year after your previous choice.

See every step in our guide to registering your new address.

SOMETHING ON YOUR MIND?

Your moving questions, answered.

Do you do moves in Espoo at weekends?

Yes. We move people in Espoo on Saturdays and Sundays as well as on weekdays. Give your preferred date in your quote request. If you plan to take things to a Sortti station on the same day, bear in mind that Ämmässuo is normally closed at weekends, while the Konala and Ruskeasanta stations are open on Saturdays and Sundays.

Do I need a permit for the moving van in Espoo?

Usually not, if the van can use the housing company’s yard or stop briefly to load where stopping is allowed. If the move affects street parking, pedestrians, cyclists or traffic, you need a permit for a temporary traffic arrangement. Apply in Espoo’s eLupapalvelu e-service in good time; the capital region’s joint guideline says at least a week before, and next to the light rail line contact Kaupunkiliikenne at least 14 days before. If the street is reserved with tow-away notice signs, they must be up at least 48 hours before they take effect.

Can you move me from Helsinki to Espoo, or from Espoo to Helsinki?

Yes. We move between Helsinki, Espoo and Vantaa with our own team and vehicles, and plan parking and access at each end separately. Longer-distance moves are agreed separately.

How long does a move from Helsinki to Espoo take?

The drive itself is usually only part of the day, and most of the time goes on carrying. That is why the volume of belongings, floors, lifts and carrying distances matter most. At rush hour, though, the drive along the main roads can take noticeably longer. Give us the details for both addresses and we will estimate the schedule in your quote.

How much does a move in Espoo cost?

The price depends mainly on the volume of belongings, floors and lifts, carrying distances, the driving distance and any extra services you choose. That is why we always give the price in a written quote based on the details of your move. The quote is free and does not commit you to anything.

I’m new to Espoo and don’t speak Finnish. Can you still help?

Yes. You can request a quote and arrange every detail of your move in English. If you are already registered in Finland, file your change of address within a week of the move. Once Espoo is your municipality of residence, your health services are organised by the Western Uusimaa wellbeing services county, and your health centre is based on your address unless you have chosen one yourself. Apply for a daycare or school place if you need one, and check your new building’s waste sorting rules.

Can you take away old furniture when I move?

Yes. Removal of old furniture can be added to the same quote. If you would rather handle it yourself, Espoo’s Sortti station is at Ämmässuo, and furniture in good condition can be donated to Kierrätyskeskus. Large items must not be left in your building’s bin room without the property manager’s permission.
